Cold Email Benchmarks 2026: Reply Rates, Bounce Rates and Spam Thresholds
Cold email benchmarks, in short: Instantly's 2026 report puts the average reply rate at 3.43%, with the top quarter of senders at 5.5% or more and the top 10% at 10.7% or more. Keep bounces under 2% and spam complaints under 0.1%; Google and Yahoo treat 0.3% as the line you must never reach. If you are above those, fix your list and volume before your copy.
Benchmarks are useful for one thing: telling you which part of your cold email is broken. A low reply rate with healthy delivery points at targeting or copy; a high bounce rate points at the list; rising complaints point at volume or relevance. This guide collects the published numbers, says exactly how each was measured, and gives the thresholds that get a sender throttled or blocked.
Key takeaways
- Reply rate: 3.43% average across Instantly's platform in 2025; 5.5%+ is top quartile, 10.7%+ top 10%.
- Measurement changes the answer: Belkins, counting only real replies, found 0.45% across 7.5 million emails.
- Follow-ups matter: 42% of replies in Instantly's data came after the first email.
- Bounce rate: keep it under 2%. Amazon SES reviews accounts at 5% and may pause them at 10%.
- Spam complaints: under 0.1%, and never 0.3% at Google or Yahoo.
- Inbox placement averaged 87.2% across all email in Validity's 2025 tests, and 77.4% at Microsoft.
What is a good cold email reply rate?
A reply rate above 5% is good and above 10% is excellent, judged against Instantly's 2026 benchmark report, which found a 3.43% average across its platform in 2025. Instantly counts all replies, including replies to follow-ups, divided by all emails sent.
| Benchmark | Reply rate | Source and measure |
|---|---|---|
| Average | 3.43% | Instantly, all replies ÷ all emails sent, 2025 |
| Top quartile | 5.5% or more | Instantly, same measure |
| Top 10% | 10.7% or more | Instantly, same measure |
| Average, excluding auto-replies and bounces | 0.45% | Belkins, 7,530,489 emails and 34,393 replies, 2025 |
| US only, same measure | 0.51% | Belkins, over 5.6 million emails to US recipients |
The gap between 3.43% and 0.45% is mostly about what counts as a reply and how the emails were sent, not that one source is wrong. Before comparing your own number, check whether your tool counts out-of-office replies and whether it divides by emails sent or by people contacted. Reply rate per person contacted is the more useful number for a small team, because it tells you how many prospects you need.
When do cold email replies come in?
Instantly's data gives four findings worth acting on:
- 58% of replies came from the first email and 42% from follow-ups. Stopping after one email gives up a large share of replies.
- Four to seven touches performed best, spaced three to four days apart.
- A second email written as a short reply to the first beat a formal follow-up by about 30%.
- Replies peaked on Tuesday and Wednesday. Monday had the most campaign launches, Friday the most auto-replies.
- Top performers kept first emails under 80 words.
Our cold email sequence guide turns these into a sequence you can copy, and the personalisation guide covers what to change for each recipient.
What bounce rate is acceptable for cold email?
Keep your bounce rate under 2%. Instantly's report gives the same figure, and Amazon SES's documentation tells senders to stay below 2%, puts accounts under review at 5% and may pause sending at 10%. Most bounces in cold email come from guessed or out-of-date addresses, so verify every list before it goes into a sequence.
| Bounce rate | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Under 2% | Healthy | Keep verifying lists before each send |
| 2% to 5% | Your list has a quality problem | Stop, verify, and remove unverifiable addresses |
| 5% or more | Providers and sending services start to act | Pause the campaign and rebuild the list |
| 10% or more | Sending may be suspended (Amazon SES) | Do not resume until the source of bad data is fixed |
What spam complaint rate is too high?
Aim for under 0.1% and never reach 0.3%. Google's sender guidelines say to keep the spam rate shown in Postmaster Tools below 0.10% and never let it reach 0.30%; Yahoo's sender guidance gives 0.3% as the limit. Amazon SES puts accounts under review at 0.1% and may pause them at 0.5%.
At 0.3%, three people in every 1,000 who receive your email mark it as spam. On a list of 500 prospects, two complaints already put you at 0.4%. That is why cold email works best in small, well-targeted batches.

What inbox placement rate should you expect?
Across all email, not just cold email, Validity's 2026 benchmark report measured average inbox placement of 87.2% in 2025, up from 83.5% in 2024, using seed-list testing. About one email in eight did not reach the inbox. Placement varied by provider:
| Mailbox provider | Inbox placement, 2025 |
|---|---|
| Gmail | 89.8% |
| Yahoo | 87.3% |
| Apple | 82% |
| Microsoft | 77.4% |
| All providers | 87.2% |
Cold email usually does worse than these averages, because it goes from newer domains to people who did not ask for it. Microsoft is the hardest of the large providers; our guide to Outlook's bulk sender requirements covers what it checks.
Which thresholds do mailbox providers enforce?
| Provider | Bulk sender definition | Requirements | Spam rate limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google (Gmail) | More than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail accounts | SPF, DKIM, DMARC (p=none or stricter), one-click unsubscribe for marketing | Below 0.10%; never 0.30% |
| Yahoo | Not stated as a number | SPF and DKIM, DMARC at least p=none, unsubscribes honoured within 2 days | Below 0.3% |
| Microsoft (Outlook.com) | More than 5,000 emails a day | SPF, DKIM and DMARC; failing mail rejected with 550 5.7.515 since 5 May 2025 | Not published |
A small team rarely sends 5,000 emails a day, but the authentication rules are worth meeting at any volume: mailbox providers judge all senders by the same signals. The email deliverability checklist walks through setting them up, and how many cold emails per day per inbox covers safe daily volumes.
How do you use these benchmarks to fix a campaign?
| What you see | Likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Reply rate under 1%, delivery healthy | Targeting or offer | Narrow the list to one role and one problem; rewrite email 1 |
| Replies, but few positive ones | Message reaches the wrong people | Tighten who is on the list |
| Bounces over 2% | Bad or old addresses | Verify the list; drop guessed addresses |
| Complaints near 0.1% | Volume too high or messages not relevant | Cut daily volume per mailbox; add an easy opt-out line |
| Opens and replies drop suddenly | Mail going to spam | Check authentication and pause new mailboxes until warmed up |
Change one thing at a time and measure over at least a few hundred prospects; small samples swing a lot. New mailboxes need time first: see how to warm up a new sending domain.
How Scalry handles this
In Scalry, a sending domain can have a daily send cap and pauses itself when its bounce or complaint rate passes a threshold. The defaults are 2% for bounces and 0.1% for complaints, the same lines as the benchmarks above, and they only apply after a minimum number of sends so a small early sample does not trigger a false alarm. Enrollments stop when a contact replies, and unsubscribes are suppressed across every campaign. Scalry cannot promise inbox placement or a reply rate; the list and the message are still yours.
